Our Story

One of New Zealand's Oldest Family Owned Butchers.

Magills was originally opened in Te Awamutu by Mr Magill in 1939. A young man who immigrated from war stricken Netherlands named Adrian Van Der Hoeven (pictured above) began working for him not long after. When Mr Magill sadly passed away, Mrs Magill offered the business to Adrian, which he purchased off her. Since then, Magills has been proudly family owned and operated.

One of the twins in the above (and below) image is Mike Van Der Hoeven, the current director alongside two of his sons, John & Edward, pictured below. Mike's grandchildren have started working part time in the school holidays, truely family owned & operated.

From wholesale to home kitchen, Magills supply only the best of New Zealand Hereford Prime Beef, Lamb, Waratah Duroc Pork & Poultry. We also specialise in our award-winning slow cooked meat range, traditionally handcrafted smallgoods, with our Vandy's range of dry cured bacon and gourmet sausages

Premium meats & craft butchery products, from our family, to yours.

Our Values

Magills Values

We’re passionate about what we do. At Magills we pride ourselves on viewing butchering as a craft - not just a trade, and are always striving to create our products with passion and quality at the forefront. We are passionate about innovation, using quality ingredients, using the best packaging & machinery, being transparent and helpful to our customers and upholding a standard that we would purchase ourselves. We hope to inspire our customers to be passionate about meat and creating meals with it just as we are.

We’re committed in all areas of business. Committed to the animal, committed to our customers, committed to supplying quality grass-fed beef & hormone-free meat, committed to our wholesale clients, committed to the environment where possible, committed to the industry & innovation, committed to complying with national standards, committed to the craft, and committed to our staff.

We’re proud to be locally owned and NZ operated. As a small family run business, we understand how vital it is to offer support where you can. We understand the importance of supporting local businesses which is why we work alongside trusted New Zealand companies everywhere we can. We hope that with more business moving this way, we can, in turn, inspire customers, clients, colleagues, and bigger corporates to do the same in our country.
